What Classifies as a Major Service vs. Minor Service?

You can receive two umbrellas of services at an auto repair shop: minor services and major services. Today, we will review the differences between the two types of services and what they include.

For every type of automobile, there are particular distinctions to what minor service and major service include. All vehicles need check-ups and maintenance as they age and gain more mileage. To determine what type of maintenance services your vehicle needs and at what point in the vehicle’s lifetime, you can always refer to your owner’s manual.

Generally speaking, minor maintenance procedures are done every 10K – 15K miles. Minor services typically include the following:

  • Oil change
  • Tire rotations
  • Tire inspections
  • Brake inspections
  • Fluid checks
  • Belt and hose checks

The objective of a minor service is to determine your car’s health and condition. The mechanic will inspect to see if there are any minor damages or leaks.

In contrast, a major vehicle service is more intricate. Major services happen less regularly (at 30K mile intervals) but are undoubtedly more significant. A major service is essential if you want to protect the investment you’ve put out for your car. Below are the types of procedures your tech will go through:

  • Road test
  • Oil change
  • All filters are exchanged for new ones (including oil, engine, cabin, etc.)
  • Replacement of coil springs
  • Fluid change of your transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, coolant/antifreeze, and windshield wiper fluid
  • Diagnostics
  • Battery test
  • Multi-point inspection (including the tires, belts, hoses, etc.)
  • And more.

A major service is usually required by your manufacturer to maintain the validity of your warranty. It also serves to make sure your vehicle ages healthily. When you take proper care of your vehicle, it is better equipped to get you where you need to go in one piece.
